Job Requirements of Public Safety Director - Sheriff:
To be considered for this position, The Chapter V, PERSONNEL, Section 22 requires the following:QUALIFICATIONS.
To qualify for an elective office of the county, a person
(a) shall be a legal voter of the state,
(b) shall be a resident of the county, and
(c) shall have resided in the county two years immediately preceding the beginning of the term of office.
(d) shall meet any other qualifications required by the State for such positions.
Candidates may be subject to thorough background investigation including a criminal history check, physical examination, including drug screen, hearing, and vision testing.
Oregon Revised Statute 204.016 (1) require the following:
(1) A person is not eligible to serve in any office listed in ORS unless the person is a citizen of the United States and an elector under the Oregon Constitution.
Oregon Revised Statute 206.015 Qualifications of Sheriff (determination of eligibility to be candidate for election to office of sheriff)
(1) A person is not eligible to be a candidate for election or appointment to the office of sheriff unless:
(a) The person is 21 years of age or older;
(b) The person has at least four years' experience as a full-time law enforcement officer or at least two years' experience as a full-time law enforcement officer with at least two years' post-high-school education; and
(c) The person has not been convicted of a felony or of any other crime that would prevent the person from being certified as a police officer under ORS to .
(2) As used in subsection (1) of this section, “two years’ post-high-school education” means four semesters or six quarters of classroom education in a formal course of study undertaken after graduation from high school in any accredited college or university. The term does not include apprenticeship or on-the-job training.
(3) If the person is not certified as a police officer by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training at the time of accepting appointment or filing as a candidate, a person elected or appointed to the office of sheriff must obtain the certification not later than one year after taking office. A copy of the certification shall be filed with the county clerk or the county official in charge of elections. The county governing body shall declare the office of sheriff vacant when the person serving as sheriff is not certified as a police officer within one year after taking office.
(4) The Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, in consultation with the Board on Public Safety Standards and Training, shall establish a procedure for determining whether an individual is eligible under subsection (1) of this section to be a candidate for election to the office of sheriff. A copy of the department’s determination of an individual’s eligibility to be a candidate for election to the office of sheriff shall be filed with the county clerk or county official in charge of elections not later than the 61st day before the date of the election. If the department determines that the individual is not eligible to be a candidate for election to the office of sheriff, the county clerk or county official in charge of elections shall not place the name of the individual on the ballot at the election. About the Position
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for the role of Public Safety Officer - Sheriff. This is a great opportunity to support public safety in one of Oregon’s most diverse and dynamic counties.
As the Sheriff, you’ll help ensure the safety and security of individuals in our custody, assist deputies and jail staff, support critical operations, and be part of a team committed to protecting and serving Lane County residents.
You’ll work in a fast-paced environment that values professionalism, integrity, and service. Whether assisting with jail operations, transportation, or community service programs, your role is vital to keeping Lane County safe and operating smoothly.
General duties of Sheriff:
The Sheriff is the chief executive officer and conservator of the peace of the county. In the execution of the office of sheriff, it is the sheriff's duty to:
1. Arrest and commit to prison all persons who break the peace, or attempt to break it, and all persons guilty of public offenses.
2. Defend the county against those who, by riot or otherwise, endanger the public peace or safety.
3. Execute the process and orders of the courts of justice or of judicial officers, when delivered to the sheriff for that purpose, according to law.
4. Execute all warrants delivered to the sheriff for that purpose by other public officers, according to law.
5. Attend, upon call, the Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, Oregon Tax Court, circuit court, justice court or county court held within the county, and to obey its lawful orders or directions. [Amended by 1985 c.339 §1.
6. The Sheriff of each county has the responsibility for search and rescue activities within each county.
7. Upon receipt of appropriate fees and after compliance with appropriate procedures shall issue the person a concealed handgun license.
8. The Sheriff of each county shall keep an office in such room or building at the place appointed by law for holding courts therein, as the county court may by order designate. (ORS 206.180)
About the Department
The Sheriff's Office, committed to justice and integrity, is sworn to protect and honored to serve the residents and visitors of Lane County.
The Sheriff’s Office provides an array of correctional services including a jail, and out-of-custody programs such as community service and an inmate work crew.
Deputies provide patrol of urban, suburban and rural areas, including timberlands, waterways, and coastal dune areas. Police service includes criminal investigation, court security, prisoner transport, and process services (criminal and civil).
Evidence and property management, criminal justice records (corrections and police), 24/7 dispatch center, and search and rescue functions round out the services the office delivers.
Lane County covers over 4,600 square miles, and is nearly the size of the state of Connecticut. Nearly 300 staff, along with many volunteers, support these services and utilizes land, marine, air and other assets to maximize our response capability.
