Waste Reduction Assistant - Events

Lane County Oregon, US (Onsite) Full-Time

Hourly Wage: $25.00 - $29.00

About the Position

This unique position offers the opportunity to recruit, develop, and grow the Sustainable Event Services (SES) Program. Lane County in partnership with the City of Eugene and Action Rent-All & Events offers durable dishware and water bottle refill stations to event producers that want to reduce waste at events and avoid use of single-use, disposable materials (e.g. plastic forks, cups, plates, etc.). Reusable dishware consumes much less energy and resources over its lifetime than disposables. The SES Program subsides the cost of dishware rental making these services affordable for all event planners who want to reduce waste. Action Rent-All delivers clean, sanitized dishware to events (*250 attendees or more) and picks-up dirty dishes at the end of the event. The Program Assistant will be an important liaison, assisting event hosts once the dishware has been delivered. 

The main responsibilities of the position include:
  • Coordinating logistics and scheduling between the event organizers and Action Rent-All.
  • Ensuring inventory is distributed to event planners and food vendors.
  • Coordinating SES program volunteers, in partnership with Master Recycler Coordinator.
  • Set-up of dish-return stations and signage, and cataloging returned dishware inventory after events.
  • Data collection, analysis, and reporting on the amount of inventory used per event and how much energy savings resulted from their use.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: 
The Program Assistant position requires field work during the months of May thru October. The Program Assistant will be responsible for conducting site visits (occasionally), communicating both in-person and through emails, program coordination and event logistics, volunteer coordination and on-site communication with food vendors.

The Program Assistant position requires strong organization and logistic skills, including managing dishware inventory, signage, and supplies that support event recycling and waste prevention activities. Additional duties may include but are not limited to, program promotion, communication with stakeholders, research, data collection, surveys, compiling and analyzing data.

About the Division

The Division of Waste Management oversees the management of solid recycling and solid waste in Lane County. The Division’s mission is to provide, safe, responsible and economical recycling and disposal services, while respecting the environment and the communities it serves.

Schedule: Flexible Schedule: Monday – Friday, however *Most events require evening and weekend work.

*This is a non-represented position*

*Extra Help employees may work up to a maximum of 520 hours per fiscal year beginning July 1 and ending June 30th of the following year.


Job Requirements:

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Community outreach and education related to recycling and waste prevention; 

  2. Basic computer skills, MS Office, Google Workspace; 

  3. Ability to work in fast-paced, stressful environments; 

  4. Ability to handle event-related inquiries and trouble-shoot any potential issues; 

  5. Maintain event schedules and ensure all deadlines are met.

EDUCATION: An equivalent combination of education and experience, demonstrating the required skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform the job tasks assigned above.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants must possess a valid Oregon Driver’s License.

  • Knowledge of recycling and waste prevention opportunities in Lane County.

  • Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office.

  • Excellent organizational and logistics management skills.

  • Demonstrate respectful and inclusive work habits, ability to work with diverse event planners and community members.

  • Ability to work independently to complete high-quality work as a representative of Lane County.

  • Excellent communication abilities both written and verbal, in-person and over email.
